Once the hills are in your blood they continuously call to you. It has been way too long since I indulged my wanderlust. Time to dust off the cobwebs.
I find it hard to believe that this spot is only half an hour walk from my house! Great Hill has excellent views to the coast, and from here you can access a lot of other excellent moorlands. It was quite windy and cold on top, but as a consequence the air was clear and the visibility was amazing!
Today we dropped off the opposite side and headed towards Roddlesworth and Tockholes. When you hit the A675 Hollinshead Hall is around 100m up the road on the other side and is an excellent place to stop for a cuppa.
From Hollinshead Hall, there is a wide vehicle sized track which takes you all the way to Abbey Village. After a short walk through Abbey Village and you can take the Withnell nature trail to Brinscall. The whole walk takes four or five hours to complete, but not a road in sight for at least 95% of it.
The route from Hollinshead Hall brings you back alongside Roddlesworth Reservoir. The reservoir is a pretty calming location as there aren't a lot of public around, I probably saw two or three people all day. The guy I was walking with is the ranger for the area, and he claims to see deer, fox, and other wildlife regularly around the reservoirs, and Hollinshead Hall.
I'm glad I kept it local for my first outing in a while as four hours was enough to make my feet ache. I think I definitely need to get out more before I begin any serious #peakbagging! Not to worry too much, I think! Castle Crag is going to be my re-introduction to the Lake District, so nothing too strenuous.
When descending Great Hill towards Roddlesworth, I expected the moors to be sodden after all the rain we have been having, but to my surprise it was pretty firm under foot! I also thought it would take longer to do the route than it did.
When you haven't been out for a while I guess you expect the worst. It doesn't take very long to lose your hardened attitude towards the great outdoors, and it's not something I'll be allowing to happen in the future.
The mountains are calling, and I must go!
So it's a date. Next Week. Me, Joe, and Castle Crag. #peakbagging!
